5 Ways to Save Money on Your Summer Travels
Let me show you a few tricks of the trade!
For all my Northern Hemisphere friends, it's summer travel time! Pack up the kids and let the relaxation & vacation time begin! The key to stretching your travel budget further is saving a few dollars here and there. When you're travelling as a family even a few dollars off each attraction can really impact what you can do on your travels and how long your vacation can last for.

Where We've Been
We spent the whole month in Christchurch, New Zealand. We have a weekend getaway planned soon to Kaikoura and Nelson. We'll be whale watching, eating delicious seafood, visiting wineries and doing a spot of hiking. We also have a super idea for a North Island road trip involving a reloction campervan which costs just $5 a day! More on that when plans firm up.

5 Ways to Save Money on Your Summer Travels!
It's time for summer getaway in the sun so here are some tips to help you save cash and create more memories along the way.
- Using Airbnb to book holiday rentals is a smart choice, especially for families. Airbnb can save you money compared to a hotel plus you have the added benefit of a kitchen, laundry and seperate bedrooms for the kids. Here's a coupon for Airbnb!
- Use Groupon to find activities in the cities you're visiting. You'll save money on attractions, meals, massages etc by booking them in advance with Groupon. Use the coupon SAVE10 to save $10 on your first Groupon. You can also use Groupon for hotels.
- Get a CityPASS. If you're visiting any of these cities, you'll save a tonne on attractions by buying a CityPASS instead of individual tickets. We've used them in Seattle, San Francisco, Boston and New York. The cost of the pass is usually about 50% of the cost of admission to individual attractions.
- If you're road tripping, a couple of simple apps can save you money. Use GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas price near you before you fill up. Also check gas prices before your cross state lines as sometimes it's much cheaper to fill up in one state than the next. Another great money saver is to use ParkWhiz when you're visiting a big city or to avoid expensive hotel parking garages. It's easy to find discounted parking even in places like New York City and Philadelphia.
- Book hotels using Priceline Express Deals. This will absolutely save you money! We do this for almost every hotel we book and save 25-60% on hotel rooms on a regular basis. Read my post on how to do it here.

Sign up for fare alerts when you're looking for flights.
If you've got a trip coming up and need to find the best price on flights, sign up for fare alerts before you book any airfares. You'll get an email notifying you if a route you're looking at is going up or down in price. This can really help you save money on airfares. You can set up fare alerts through sites like Kayak, SkyScanner and Google Flights.
